Since our arrival in Texas, we've experienced some mysterious electronic alarms going off, only to discover that it was birds! Grackles are medium-large black birds, slightly smaller than a crow. They are very bold and make beeps and whistles, as well as other sounds. We found them amusing, once we found out it was THEM, and not our various alarms! The locals find them quite annoying due to their sheer numbers and their mess... Sort of like the pigeons in California...
We ended up skipping The Alamo. John wasn't up to a bus ride and a long walk downtown, and by 11 a.m. (check out time), it was quite hot. So, maybe next time through, we'll do it. We're smarter now... No more drives through downtown!
I also decided we would no longer try to follow old US 80, but we would follow old US 90 instead because it's a bit more direct and just as interesting.
We are spending the night in Katy, Texas, just outside of Houston.
